THE SMARTPHONES RACE

NOKIA FACING NEW CHALLENGES

Without any doubt Nokia is the world’s leader manufacturer of mobile phones, but recent trends in the smartphones arena have made Nokia to return to their drawing boards and released one of its high tech N97 which was announced in dec 2008 in Barcelona Spain at Nokia world. It is one of the Nokia’s most prominent touchscreen device equipped with a wide 3.5inch(360×640 pixel) touchscreen display.A sliding phone and QWERTY equipped,a fifth edition S60 symbian OS. A great piece of device on smartphone platform.Since the release of iPhonein June 2007 and a year later on July 2008 iPhone 3Gwas launched neither resting, they made it again and released more smarter iPhone 3G S.This was released on June 2009 just almost same time with Nokia’s N97 and Samsung’s Omnia HD.The surge in releases from phone makers has reinvented high tech as the norm for quality products.

As seen above Nokia’s N97 and Samsung’s Omnia HD specifications showing a tough race to win Global attention. Every new high end phone released on the market today is more high tech giving you more options. It’s the software applications that really make these phones more smarter than others. For example the default Home screen iPhone 3GS has not less than 20 applications which gives a user broader options.Coming to the data field as seen
above samsung’s Omnia HD claim of data speeds of upto 7 mbps is a hype I don’t buy that, cause there are so many things
determining data speeds for example your ISP,position, cache, cookies, phone memory and how to use your phone.

Different strategies are used in being the best out there. Some handset makers insist on improving the hardware and some
have opted for software as most consumers don’t care on what ‘s the built in hardware is.For example Samsung has opted to make a great piece of hardware out of its smartphones and apple’s iPhone has beautified its phone more on appearence and great software applications. On the other hand Nokia may decide to make an extra powerful phone with great features but fails in screen size, battery or applications.

Smartphones do resemble a Small computer on your palm. Softwares like Word.Excel and photo editors once only accessed through a computer have been mabilzed and now we can have office on the go.Apple have even made easier to write and post your blog on their iPhone.

Recently many users of the new iPhone 3G S complained of overheating which made Apple to update
its online support documents. This is a sensitive matter to Apple taken the success behind their last releases.Apple response on
overheating issue was to blame users for improper use of the phone citing using in high temperatures was the cause.
Apple say the iPhone 3G S is twice as fast as the previous iPhone 3G but the amazing thing with the iPhone 3G S is the first iPhone to include video recording which
can record upto 640×480 pixels at 30 frames per second. This is way too behind when compared with other smartphones with 12 megapixels and worse it’s their first venture in video platform. One of the greatest innovation included in iPhone 3G S is an application to locate a lost iPhone on a map and a remote wipe feature if stolen The other intresting thing with iPhone is that it supports Multi-touch and a special coating to resist finger prints which Apple competitors cannot manage.

You can assume that Samsung and iPhone are leaders in the touchscreen platform by their new major releases.
For example Samsung Omnia PRO B7610 has a 3.5 inch (480×800) pixels display and a slide out QWERTY keyboard,
supported with 3.5G for data.WiFi and GPS.This is an improvement taken that Samsung is taking the leader Nokia by the
head not leaving any stones unturned. Nokia is on the edge can they stand the heat?.

But no matter what, mobile makers are focused on personalizing technology to our palms away from the big
computer. If a neo-mobile processor is 600 MHz same as a computer pentium III or even better, bigger storage capabilities, then we are seeing some early signs of mobilizing the computer for good.

Bandwidth

Bandwidth is the amount of data sent over a connection in a given amount of time.Or in other words bandwidth is used to measure the data sent over a connection.

Broadband

Broadband is a connection used in data communication, and it supports highspeed data transfer.Technically it is more defined to refer to data transmitted in multiple pieces of data sent at a go and with high speed.

GPRS

GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Services.GPRS has data transmission speeds of 115 kbps but it can be limited to around 35 kbps It is mostly used mobile internet and MultiMedia services. GPRS uses GSM networks to transfer data .The data transmitted usually comes in the form of packets.

EDGE

EDGE means Enhanced Data for Global Evolution and can also be called Enhanced GPRS (EGPRS) EDGE is considered 2.5G and has a maximum speed of 475 kbps which is three times faster than the aged GPRS system. EDGE can have an average speed limited at 135 kbps compared with GPRS at only 32 kbps.To meet the requirements of EDGE both the GSM Network and the phone must be EDGE supported.

3G

3G can be defined as 3rd generation. Its includes High data speeds and great voice capabilities. 3G also enables
Live streaming video. It has very high speeds on data transmission and probably a great step in the wireless world.
3G has twice the speed of EDGE and can be put close to 800 kbps when using supported phone. There are different 3G standards for example HSPDA, UMTS. And it seems 4G is on its way, probably will match the revered Fiber optic.

USE NOKIA PC SUITE TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET ON YOUR PC

Ever wondered how you could use your mobile as a modem to connect internet to your windows computer, then i will show you
the easiest way to do that. Just follow my guideline step by step and you will easily complete the process.

Step 1: Let’s assume you have a nokia set readily configured to access internet, if so, use a computer and download
Nokia PC Suite from Nokia website and save to a place in that computer (DO NOT RUN IT) then burn it on a new CD.

Step 2: Now you have your copy of the Nokia pc suite. what next ? Now get your self a cable to connect one end to your phone
and the other to a USB PORT in your computer. Please do not connect now, but place it ready.

Step 3: Now open up your CD drive and insert the Nokia PC Suite CD you have. Then after you have installed the PC suite
with all its drivers, you will go to the control panel.

Step 4: Now click the control panel and go to Network and Internet connections and click to open. You will then open internet
options and go straight to connections tab. While there click on the “setup” radio button and a new window will pop up. “Welcome
to the new connection wizard. Click next and the next window which says “Network connections type” check the first option which
says “connect to the internet” and click next. Now you will come to one which says “How do you want to connect the internet?
Check the second option which says “setup my connection manually” and click next. This new window check the first option which
says “connect using a dialup modem..click next and comes a new one saying “Type the name of your ISP in the following box”.
meaning your service provider, and hit next.the next window says “Type the phone number below” and most likely the number is
*99# and go to next one.In this window you should type your service provider’s Username and password but NOT a must to other
providers.so ask your service provider.and at last here comes the completion window.Just click on the “Finnish”

Step 5: Now we are going to do some little extra work by going to the control panel once again.Return to the “Network and
Internet connections” and click open. Now click “Network connections” you will find your new dialup connection and LAN. Right
click your dialup connections and scroll to properties and click to open. Now you can see five tabs.So let’s start with:

  • General tab
  • Here we will start by clicking “configure” and once there check the two boxes “Enable hardware flow control” and Enable modem
compression” then click OK to return to properties window.

  • Options
  • Here there are four check boxes.

  • Display progress while connecting–to be checked
  • Prompt for name and password certificate e.t.c–to be checked
  • Include windows login domain—-uncheck this one
  • Prompt for phone number—-to be checked
  • security
  • On this option just check the first one “Typical{recommended settings} and choose “Allow unsecured password”

  • Networking
  • Types of dial-up server I am calling–”PPP Windows 95/98/NT4/2000,internet.
Then click the settings button below and check “Enable LCP Extension” and “Enable software compression” OK.
This connection uses the following items.

  • Internet protocol– – checked
  • QoS packet scheduler–checked.
  • and uncheck all the rest, leave only the above two.
While in Networking click the TCP/IP properties button and open. Check the folowing:

  • Obtain an IP address automatically
  • Obtain DNS server address automatically
  • Then click the Advanced button. On the Advanced TCP/IP settings checkthe following:

  • Use default gateway on remote network
  • Use IP Header compression
  • Now go to DNS tab and check:

  • Append primary and specific DNS suffixes
  • Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix
  • Now move to WINS tab and uncheck or disable the following:

  • Enable LMHOSTS lookup
  • And last check this :

  • Disable NetBios over TCP/IP
  • Click OK,OK,OK,OK and Exit.

Step 6: Now connect your cable to your phone and the other end to the USB port, then double click on PC suite icon on your desktop.
After your phone has featured in the pc suite window, click settings and type all your settings provided by your ISP and after that click on “connect to internet.
    That’s it.

OPTIMIZING YOUR DIALUP VIA (NOKIA PC SUITE)

The reason why I have enclosed via pc suite is refering to a Nokia phone used as a modem when using it to connect
internet on your home pc.Most of third world countries still use dialup even though it is widely believed as the slowest mode
of internet connection, but in reality the slowness is sometimes the result of your computer settings . If you will do some little
cleaning and disable some non essential things you will experience a great Net surfing. If you are using your phone as a modem
    then continue reading.

The below windows NT(vista and xp) services are NOT needed when using Dial-up.They use your resources in the
background. So open your Start menu and click on RUN. Then type services.msc and hit enter. Then search for the
    below
services and double click to open each in another window and stop the service and put it disable or manual.
    Disable This

    • Autoupdate
    • BITS
    • Clipbook
    • Computer browser
    • DNS client
    • Routing and remote access
    • Server
    • Smart card
    • TCP/IP netbios helper
    • Telephony–MANUAL
    • Telnet
    • Webclient
    • Wireless zero config
    • Workstation
    • Then return to Start menu and click on run or a shortcut (windows key+R).Then type gpedit.msc and enter.
In the next window clck on the + sign next to administrative templates and then another + sign next to network
then go down to where QoS packet scheduler is and only highlight it. In the right pane double click on“Limit reservable
      bandwitdh

and a window will popup with three options choose enable and go down and change the 20% reserved for microsoft services to
      0%
      click OK and exit.

HOW TO TRANSFER FILES USING NOKIA PC SUITE

Transfer data,mp3,videos from PC to phone

You may happen to download mp3,videos or images from your computer and you want to transfer them in bulk
to your phone via the data cable. The data cable file transfer is much faster and can transfer mp3, video,or images and even
applications in bulk where a bluetooth dongle will only transfer one file at a time.

So how do you do it? Double click your Nokia PC suite icon on your desktop and click on File manager. there will be two panes
which means oo the left is your disk drives including your phone in built memory and a memory card if you have one.
Navigate to where you downloaded your file and right click on it .Then click on copy and come to where you have located your memory
card and right click on it,then click paste. After the transfer is over you can exit.

FIREFOX: This looks great when you do the impossible sometimes.Mobile wapsites are hardly accessible on a desktop,
since mobiles use j2me. But recently a trick came around where all needed is to download firefox browser in your computer
and then install firefox add ons(wmlbrowser firefox add ons) and you should then activate so as the firefox servers can
load from mobile sites for example m,facebook.com or even yahoo mobile messenger. The goodness with mobiles browsing

I have talked a little about mobiles in the article mobile craze on it’s success and impact on our lives. But also i have highligted on other topics too. This blog is about general information..In the next posts more on mobiles, computers and related topics will be highlighted. Keep reading.

      MOBILE CRAZE

The mobile industry has evolved into an inevitable way of life to the global population and is posed for higher successes in the unfolding future. To many the small handheld devices are held dear and more reliable source of communications both in voice and data services. Having a look at Kenya’s safaricom successes in the mobile industry, innovated the first mobile money transfer which has pulled a staggering a 5million customers and an annual $10million worth of transfers. This has sent shivers through the spines of the banking community for venturing in their territories. Moreover the mode of power bills payment has also shifted from the traditional banks to a mobilized system through the now Revered MPESA money transfer. Recent trends show mobile industry venturing in the field of Data services has surged translating to an unprecedented scale of competition between wireless and LAN, Ethernet players.Safaricom introduced HSDPA which is very fast but only available in the two major cities,And the major plus to Data services ,they have also lowered broadband mobile office to around us$ 45, very competitive.

The mobile industry is the only one mostly likely spared off from Global recession for commanding the biggest sector of the
economy and a lifeline to the millions of micro-economic investments in the country.

Mobile phones have rapidly grown to
a darling of the young generation. A recent survey done on the impact of mobile phones in Kenyan schools, discovered that young boys and girls do more sms’ing during night hours hence affecting their studies and potentialities. This is one of the rare side effects of the device. It has also driven the youth further into visiting dirty western porn sites which will degenerate their moral, religious values among their communities. These dirty western life styles are slowly washing away our African young boys into destruction at an alarming speed. It is inevitable Rapist would be on the rise. Therefore we appreciate the mobile revolution in the 21st century which has emerged to be a force to reckon with, but we should also bear in mind technology also impairs our minds by whole heartedly tying dependency on technology, denying us freedom of thinking.

Mobile phones have added constraints to the struggling city denizen opening up to new challenges never experienced before in Africa. Recently a firm introduced a new software which can undelete SMS’S, threatening the very core of families. This firm is making money out of taking advantage for pathetic undeleting services. This is done by spouses spying on each other mobile messages and calls by just delivering the SIM card to the firm. They have classified these services for jealous men who want to know every deleted masseges and phone numbers of their mates.western styles!!

This was an overview of mobiles impact in kenya ,a milestone and a technology which has simplified life and spurred economic growth to many. Thanks once again to the innovator.

      MOBILE INTERNET

Every phone enabled with wap(wireless access protocol) is capable of connecting to internet. Mobile phones come with their own browser which enables one to visit sites in the world wide web. Every browser must access internet by using HTTP(Hyper text transfer protocol) which can be compared to p.o box (post office box) followed by an address whch will direct it to the intended place of delivery. From this example, http://www.google.com shows that entering Google.com just after the http:// shows our intended address is google.com.Google is a search engine enabling you to enter words of choice or questions. Google will search for and return many options called search results. From the displayed you will choose a site which is close to your search or continue with the other results.Another way is by entering in your phone browser the address of a particular address without going through google.

Before one is able to connect to the internet, your phone must be activated with settings provided to you by your services provider. This can be sent to your phone from the ISP(internet service provider) by SMS and be activated upon receiving,or if you know the settings then you can enter them manually. There are also third party phone browsers meaning seperate from your inbuilt phone browsers. This browsers are in the form of application and are downloaded from the internet.Example of such browsers are Operamini,Bolt,Teashark, etc,This browsers come with different styles and are more advanced and faster than your phone’s inbuilt browser. They can be downloaded from your phone browser by simply entering their addresses or by just entering the name in Google web search.

Browsers like operamini would not only let you access only wapsites but the whole web.Operamini uses proxy servers and it compresses data and images before it reaches your phone hence reducing bandwidth expenses and it is the most fastest in downloading pages to your phone. Not all downloads in the NET are free.Only those described as FREEWARE OR OPENSOURCE are free to download without paying anything. With your phone you can download applications in the form games, browsers, social (MIG33),images.ringing tones, wallpapers, themes, and more intresting things.Whenever you access internet, your services provider charges you for data downloaded to your phone and not the time you use browsing,This data is counted in KB(kilo bytes) or MB(mega bytes) depending on your service provider.

back to top of the page

      MOBILE DOWNLOADS

When doing a search in the internet to download a game, mp3, videos, or any application, you will start by entering your search term in a search engine like Google. If you want to download without specifying the name of the mp3 you will be presented with 10 search results which may not suite your needs. So to specify the name of the artist would give you good results.

Second to check is if it’s a freeware opensource,or shareware. Freeware can be downloaded freely without any strings attached. No paying for the software but may not be redistributed or the source code is not provided. A shareware could still be downloaded but for trial purposes and for a period. After that period ends then you will be prompted to pay or else the application would not respond.Opensource is free to use, redistribute, and the source code is freely provided for the general public.

Mobiles application downloads are determined by compatibility issues. This means, not every application is compatible with every phone. For example Nokia phones have been categorized into two versions Nokia Series 40(S40) and Series 60 (S60) Some applications can be run only on S60’S but not on S40’S and some can run in both versions. So whenever you want to download an application, see if your phone is compatible with that application.

      Free Applications

For example you can download free applications such as :-

      • Mig 33
      • Qeep
      • Ringtones
      • Nimbuzz
      • Google maps
      • Dictionary
      • Mobile browsers
      • Games
      • Education
      • Email & messaging
      • Music

These applications are for all mobiles.

      MOBILE TRANSCODERS ON YOUR DESKTOP

Here is a very good option for those on dialup or broadband where traffic counts for the data downloaded to a computer. There are several mobile Transcoders but I have chosen three as the best based on performance, reformatting and compression of data.
      These are:-

      SKWEEZER

Skweezer can be used on both desktop and mobile. Skweezer is a mobile HTML Transcoder. Since a normal webpage can be anything between 200-700 kb Skweezer will reformat and compress contents in any webpage. For a small traffic minded person who could gain from the resizing of big web pages ,then this mobile Transcoder will save them a lot . In places like Africa internet is expensive, where the majority can only access it through cyber café or mostly on their phones. By using Skweezer on a computer, most WebPages which are for “read only” like CNN or BBC, I have managed to save a lot of the MB’S I bought from my ISP.Even downloading is possible. Just before it’s ready skweezer will redirect you to the download site.

      MOWSER

Unlike Skweezer, mowser does not compress all WebPages ex. CNN.COM will be displayed normally which is over 300 kb while on Skweezer the same will use 80kb plus images.

      Google.com/xhtml

Google only reformats WebPages on the fly but will not compress. If a page cannot be reformatted Google will display “click here to go direct to the webpage. Google cannot reformat the webpage for your mobile”. Otherwise Google still is one of the best out there.

      • HOW TO USE OPERAMINI ON YOUR DESKTOP

You can now use the famous mobile browser Operamini on your desktop computer. This will enable you to get the full web with a full screen view. Operamini reformats and compresses data, reducing of page sizes, before delivering to your phone, which means less traffic hence saving you money. You can read more on how to use Operamini on your desktop HERE and know how you can get it on your computer.

Just follow the instructions. Get the java SE development kit and the wireless toolkit 2.5.5 for CLCD. Although I have to add that it is a bit tricky on how to download the JDK from sun java website which even though they give a free tool but you will be so confused with which one to download. Then is the issue of the file size to be downloaded which is not less than 70mb and its immense usage of memory Remember to consider that sun java products are memory hungry.

        BOLT MOBILE BROWSER

I have personal downloaded Bolt to my phone and tested it. I works fine but only the pages are a bit not compressed to fit phone’s smaller screens. The contents are the same as on desktop web and the browser is a bit faster. The below specs are from the BOLT company defining their browser’s capabilities. You can download to your phone by clicking on the link below.Just simply provide your email and submit then check your mail and click a link in your email to start downloading.

HOW TO USE OPERAMINI SERVERS ON PC THROUGH GOOGLE

        Operamini servers compress web contents before directing to your phone. This has resulted in favourable small traffic due to resizing of webpages and delivering the same contents to you as viewed on desktop. I have tried a way in which i could use operamini servers and so i first downloaded OPERA 10.0 turbo WEB BROWSER and after that entered the below address on the top address bar {http://www.google.com/m?client=ms-opera mini&channel=new&pref=s&sigp=client+q+channel+pref&sig=AMcta0JNwPSa3UGKQ6aUT02iGNr3lovKg&safe=images&gwt=on} You should not confuse this with {google.com/xhtml} or {google.com/gwt/n}

You can even remove the last part “&safe=images&gwt=on” to get real direct contents from operamini without gwt. Just try it without downloading of java tools. But if you insist on java then download the JRE only.
